Why Trust Matters for LGBTQ+ Folx When It Comes to Money
Hi, I’m David Treece. I’ve been out as a gay man since I was a teenager. My husband, Luis, and I have been together for almost 40 years. I’ve also worked as a financial advisor for over 30 years.
When it comes to money, trust matters. Big time.
Money is personal. It touches every part of your life—where you live, how you care for your family, what your future looks like. If you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community, you know that your life might not look like everyone else’s. And that’s okay. In fact, it’s something to take pride in.
But here's the thing: not every financial planner understands what that means.
That’s why trust is so important. You want to work with someone who gets it. Someone who sees you, respects you, and knows how to support your goals. LGBTQ+ people face unique challenges—things like marriage rights, legal paperwork, spousal benefits, and more. And you need advice that fits your life.
That’s why I wrote my book, Take Pride in Your Money: LGBTQ+ Financial Empowerment Stories & Strategies.
This book contains stories, strategies, and real-life examples from LGBTQ+ people I’ve worked with. It’s not just about numbers. It’s about how to use your money to feel strong, safe, and proud. I talk about stuff like:
- How to choose a financial advisor you can trust.
- Why having the right legal documents matters.
- How to plan for retirement and still live fully today.
- How to make sure your wishes are respected later in life.
- How to invest in line with your values.
One of the biggest questions I get from LGBTQ+ clients is this:
“Are they part of our community? Are they LGBTQ+-friendly?”
They ask this about lawyers, accountants, retirement homes—pretty much everything. Why? Because we don’t want to be judged. We don’t want to be disrespected or ignored. We want to be safe and seen.
That’s why I always send clients to people I trust—whether they’re LGBTQ+ or solid allies who truly care about our community.
You deserve to work with people who honor you and your life. People who listen. People who advocate. People who know that financial planning isn’t just about charts—it’s about your life.
In Take Pride in Your Money, I share my best tips to help you feel confident and ready. I want you to take charge, take pride, and build a future that’s bright, bold, and yours.
Let’s be honest—you are not a financial risk. You are a financial force.
