how will your surviving loved ones cope when you die?
They will have to handle your affairs without you at a time when the combination of grief, financial decisions, and time-sensitive paperwork can be overwhelming.
Take the time to put everything in writing— today—while time is on your side. While you can still talk openly with loved ones … ask questions … correct mistakes … update beneficiaries … and revise legal documents.
- What funeral or memorial arrangements do you prefer?
- What will be the state of the family’s finances if you die? If your spouse/partner dies?
- Where would be the most practical place for the survivor(s) to live?
- Specifically, who could be helpful to the survivor(s) in making major decisions?
- What benefits will the survivor(s) be eligible for?
- What records are needed to apply for those benefits, and where are they located?
- If you own a business or other enterprise, what should be done with it upon your death?
- What arrangements should be made for the care of dependent children in the event of the simultaneous death of the parents?
After your life ends, the clock has run out on most opportunities. The power of attorney ends … certain decisions can no longer be changed … financial institutions need action to be taken … accounts may be restricted … beneficiary and ownership rules take over.
As you gather and document your information, you’ll undoubtedly want to speak with your attorney, insurance agent, and financial advisor to clarify and confirm details. You’ll want to make sure that both you (and your spouse/partner) have a valid and up-to-date will, that your life insurance is adequate for the financial needs of your survivors, and that federal estate taxes will be held to a minimum.
The clock is ticking … download and complete your Survivors Guide now.
